After a first-quarter struggle, the Lakers came out strong in the second quarter as they used a fast break well to open up a double-digit lead. They did not trail for long as the Pelicans, who have given up 70 first-half points in two straight games, remained out of sync.
In the first half, the Lakers shot 55.1%, including 6 of 15 from deep, and opened up a double-digit lead. James had 18 of his 27 points in the first half, while Brandon Ingram had 16 points and Davis added 18.
The Lakers never trailed in the game as they held an 11-point advantage midway through the third quarter. However, that advantage was cut to 106-103 when Trey Murphy III hit back-to-back 3s, the second from 27 feet, to help the Pelicans surge into the lead.
New Orleans tied the score three times before Ingram scored on a drive to give the Pelicans a 129-123 lead with 1:02 left. Ingram also hit two free throws and a jumper in the final quarter to keep the Pelicans within striking distance.
Fans were cheering for James during introductions and when he scored, especially after his end-to-end transition dunk in the third quarter. He also dove into the stands chasing the ball in the fourth and was patted on the back supportively by the crowd.

But the Pelicans fought back, led by CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy III. Jonas Valanciunas had a 3-pointer and a layup, and Alvarado made a 3 and a basket as New Orleans pulled within 106-103 with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter.

It was only a matter of time before Kawhi Leonard carried the load for Los Angeles and he did just that. His 35 points helped the Clippers beat the New York Knicks 134-128 in overtime Saturday night.
Until that point, it was just another game in which the Clippers were outplayed and lost by a considerable margin. They had gone a combined 24 and 25 points behind in their last two games and the Wizards’ 35-point lead was even more daunting.
The Clippers started the game by letting the Wizards catch them off guard in the first quarter. They scored only 19 points in the first 12 minutes on under-30% shooting and just four in the entire half overall, compared to 16 for Washington.
That was because the Wizards kept their defense tight and their offense afloat. They held the Clippers to just four 3-pointers and made nine of their 20 free throws, while also scoring 22 points off turnovers.
After that, the Knicks began to find their way in this one, with Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle putting on different shows in the paint. While Randle bruised through the paint to get his points, Brunson was deadly from the midrange and got his own team going in the fourth by slashing and attacking the basket.
His free throws, combined with Kuzma’s three-pointer at the buzzer, helped the Knicks win their third game in a row and snap a four-game losing streak against the Clippers.
Giannis Antetokounmpo matched Wilt Chamberlain’s and Elgin Baylor’s career record with back-to-back games of at least 40 points, 20 rebounds and five assists. The Bucks pushed their season-opening streak to seven straight wins and extended it to match the franchise’s record set in 2018-19 and 1971-72.
RJ Barrett
The Clippers outlasted the Knicks 134-128 in overtime Saturday night to win their third straight game. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George each had 35 points as Los Angeles hung on to beat New York despite shooting a season-low 48 percent from the field and blowing a 17-point fourth quarter lead in the final minute.
The Knicks trailed by as many as 21 points in the first quarter, but Jalen Brunson returned from a non-COVID illness and led the Knicks with 41 points. Julius Randle had 28 and Quentin Grimes added 14 points.
Isaiah Hartenstein and Miles McBride also had double-doubles as the Knicks outscored Philadelphia 108-97 to win their second straight road game. Evan Fournier played a career-high 31 minutes off the bench to score 17 points as the Knicks outscored the 76ers 59-49 in the paint.
A late scratch of RJ Barrett (illness) created a window for McBride to pick up more playing time. He scored 14 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists, while also leading the team in plus-minus.
Impact The loss of Barrett to a lower respiratory infection forced Thibodeau to change his rotation a bit in the fourth quarter, as Quickley, Hartenstein and Toppin got into the starting lineup. The unit started the period with five straight points to cut the Clippers lead to single digits.
The Clippers would respond to this run by going on a 6-0 run, and the Knicks responded with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the Clippers lead to six with three minutes remaining. That’s all the way until Norman Powell posterized Randle with a dunk and-one to give the Clippers a commanding 98-81 lead with 3:33 left in the game.

In a battle of two of the most efficient three-point shooting teams in the NBA, the Clippers were able to salvage another win against New York. Kawhi Leonard scored 35 points to lead six players in double figures as the Clippers outlasted the Knicks 134-128 in overtime on Saturday night.
The Clippers started the game off hot from three, hitting four of their first five tries to take a 14-9 lead with a little over four minutes gone. The Knicks countered with a strong start from their second unit that included Immanuel Quickley, Isaiah Hartenstein, Obi Toppin and Miles McBride.
However, the Clippers responded with a 12-2 run to open the second quarter, which led to a 38-34 advantage. Despite a pair of back-to-back threes from Quickley, the Knicks could not find their way out of the hole as the Clippers held a 55-45 advantage at the end of the period.
George, who hit 3-of-6 three-pointers, tallied 11 points in the opening frame for Los Angeles. He then added eight more in the third as the Clippers built a 19-point lead before allowing the Knicks to cut it to 98-81 in the fourth quarter.
Jalen Brunson came off the bench and scored 41 points to lead the Knicks, but he missed a contested three-pointer with 8.7 seconds left in regulation that could have won the game. RJ Barrett finished with 14 points, but he was 6-of-21 overall.
The Clippers were able to pull away in overtime, thanks to Batum’s late three-pointer that tied the game at 115 with just over two minutes remaining. Then, Leonard converted on all eight of his free throws in the extra session to help the Clippers to a 134-128 victory over the Knicks.

The first two Mondays in February are reserved for the Boston Beanpot, a tournament that has long been a beloved city tradition. Since 1952, Boston’s college hockey bragging rights and the storied Beanpot trophy have been up for grabs in a game that draws students, alumni, and hockey fans throughout the region.
BU vs. Northeastern
The 68th Beanpot tournament will take place on Monday, February 7, when Boston University and Northeastern University meet at TD Garden. BU will play the first round and Northeastern the second, with the winner facing Harvard in the semifinals.
BU is the defending Beanpot champions and will be looking to win its third straight title against Northeastern on Monday night at 8 pm. The Terriers beat Harvard 4-3 in the semifinals, and a win would put them in a position to claim their 31st Beanpot trophy.
Northeastern is a 13-10-3 team that entered the season ranked ninth. It’s also a program with a young roster that will be bolstered by the addition of some freshmen. Those players include backline freshmen Vinny Borgesi and Jackson Dorrington, as well as forward Cam Lund.
The Huskies are a team that has been on a roll in recent weeks and will be taking a four-game winning streak into the matchup with the Terriers. BU is 6-3-1 in its last 10 games and has won its last five in a row.
In their last five games, BU has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 20-1. Those victories have come against teams including Cornell, UConn, New Hampshire and Merrimack College.
After the Beanpot, BU will then have some time to recharge before the start of their Hockey East schedule. They will then play three consecutive Hockey East home-and-home series against UConn (Nov. 4-5), Northeastern (Nov. 11-12) and New Hampshire (Dec. 2-3).
Meanwhile, Northeastern will then hit the road for a stretch of six non-conference games in December, starting with a trip to Nashville to face their 2022 NCAA tournament opponent Western Michigan. Then it will be back to the Boston area for a matchup with Harvard on January 1.
The Huskies have a good mix of young and experienced players on their roster, with sophomore defenseman Aidan McDonough, junior forward Tom Cole and freshman goalie T. J. Semptimphelter leading the way. The Huskies will also have senior goaltender Drew Commesso on the bench to represent the United States at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The tournament is sure to be a good challenge for the Huskies, and it’s one that will give them a lot of experience to learn from.

Harvard University is one of the teams that the Boston College men’s ice hockey team is most familiar with. The Crimson have won 15 Beanpot titles and are second all-time in the tournament. They have a 7-14-3 record entering the tournament and have a top-two points leader in junior forward Nick Abruzzese, who has 19 points in 17 games this season.
This year’s Crimson are missing several players who were a part of last year’s championship squad, including goaltender Becky Dutton, but they have a talented group of seniors and a strong offense to lead them to the top of the conference. The Crimson are also a top penalty kill and power play unit, and have a strong defense.
The Terriers opened the first period with a high-energy, physical game that lasted almost eight minutes before BU captain Logan Cockerill found the back of the net on a power play to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. That led to a period that featured punishing hits from both sides, as both teams threw their weight around in the neutral zone and throughout intense puck battles.
While Harvard struggled on the power play, their defense was able to block out a lot of the Terriers’ chances and keep them from scoring. In fact, BU’s penalty kill was only a single goal away from being the difference in this game.
Neither team scored in the second period, but Harvard was able to generate a couple of strong chances early in the frame. Senior forward Matthew Coronato had a shot on goal that was deflected by freshman forward Quinn Hutson in the opening minute, and then Dornbach was sent off for roughing after he drew a tripping penalty during a netfront scrum that saw Marshall Rifai pull Peterson’s helmet off.
But Harvard was unable to find any real momentum as the period came to a close, and BU was able to build on their lead for the rest of the game. The Terriers dominated the third period, but couldn’t find a way to score.
Despite all their frustrations, the Terriers have a chance to make a deep run in the Beanpot with their strong performance today. They’ll face Northeastern and Harvard in their final two games of the regular season, and a win against the Huskies would secure the title.
BC vs. Harvard
Boston College faces Ivy League rival Harvard in the third semifinal game of the 2023 men’s Beanpot sem. The Crimson will be looking to win their fifth Beanpot title in six years, while the Eagles look to capture their first Beanpot championship since 2018.
Harvard will be a tough opponent for BC to beat, with the Crimson leading the ECAC in scoring and coming into Conte Forum on an 8-2-0 home record. The Eagles have been stingy in their last three games, but the Crimson will be an interesting challenge for the Eagles to overcome.
The Crimson have a strong offense, led by senior forward Matthew Coronato who leads the team with ten goals and 14 points. He scored the first of two power play goals against BC on Monday to put the Crimson up 2-0 early in the second period.
But the Eagles battled back to tie the score 2-2 with a power play goal from Mike Posma as the man advantage expired. After a lengthy delay in the middle of the third, the Crimson responded to tie it again.
After a scoreless second period, the Eagles started to put pressure on the Crimson in the third period. Nikita Nesterenko danced through the Harvard defense and scored to cut the lead to 2-1 with just over a minute left in the period.
This was the closest the Crimson had come to a lead until the final minutes of the game. Harvard was down 3-0, but with less than two minutes to go in the third, freshman Cutter Gauthier tied the score 2-2 with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.
The Eagles then had a huge comeback push in the final period, outshooting Harvard by an incredible 22-2 margin. But a goal from Harvard’s Becca Gilmore with just 3:21 left was the difference, and Harvard went on to defeat BC 5-4.
Despite the loss, the Eagles are still looking for their first Beanpot title since 2018. This year’s Boston College team is rejuvenated and has plenty of talent on the ice. In fact, senior co-captain Hannah Bilka ranks fourth in the Hockey East with 1.26 points per game and sophomore forward Abby Newhook has four goals and an assist in her last three games.
BC vs. Northeastern
The rivalry between the Terriers and the Huskies is one of the most storied in college hockey. The two teams have played each other 105 times, including four Beanpot games in the past five years. This year’s matchup is a rematch of last season’s final.
With a win, the Terriers could add to their record of 17 Beanpot titles and earn a spot in the title game. But first they will face the pesky Northeastern University Eagles, who have won three straight and have a longstanding tradition in the tournament.
Boston’s sports have long been defined by rivalries, and the Beanpot is an integral part of that. The city has produced championships in all the major professional sports, and the Beanpot has served as a bridge between those rivalries and the local communities that support them.
This weekend’s matchup between BU and Northeastern marks the 70th annual Beanpot. The two teams will meet Monday night at TD Garden, after Harvard plays Boston College in the semifinals at 5 pm.
The Huskies, who are 20-6-0 and have won nine of their last ten, sit atop Hockey East. They also have a Hobey Baker candidate in forward Matt Brown, and several talented players throughout the lineup are contributing balanced production.
But the Huskies have been especially strong on the blue line this season, limiting opponents to just a 1.33 goals per game. Freshman goaltender Drew Commesso has been excellent, posting a.909 save percentage and 2.67 GAA, while backup Vinny Duplessis has been solid, as well.
After a scoreless second period, the teams entered the third with BC clinging to a 1-0 lead, despite the Huskies being outshot 13-3. With just over six minutes to play, Harris slid into the slot and ripped a shot that slipped between Dop’s legs.
Dop had no chance to stop it, and the puck rolled out of his crease to an open net. It was the type of goal that he’s been saving for 57 minutes, and he did his best to keep it out.
At 1:07 left in the game, BC pulled Dop for an extra skater and Harris got the puck into the zone, slipping it past him for a 2-1 lead. Just five seconds later, senior right defenseman Jack St. Ivany was sent to the penalty box for cross-checking, allowing NU to break out of its zone and into BC’s.

Kendrick Lamar
